Swimming pool coping is chosen with the surround: the coping sets the edge line, and the pool paving is laid to it. Cast concrete copings take finishes such as exposed aggregate or a smooth or textured overlay.

Bullnose Pool Coping

Bullnose pool coping has a rounded nose that overhangs the pool wall. Swimmers grip it, children sit on it and wet feet cross it. Bullnose units are bedded on mortar on the top of the pool wall, set level along the waterline and jointed so that splash water runs away from the pool.

Pool Paving: Pavers Around the Pool

Paving around a pool gives a firm floor, keeps soil and grass out of the water, and carries splash and rain away. The surround falls away from the coping towards a lawn, bed or drain. Light pavers stay cooler underfoot in summer than charcoal ones. Clay pavers suit face-brick homes and smooth concrete suits modern homes; pattern options are under paving designs.

Pool Paving Layout

A pool surround is planned from the coping outwards. The paving runs wide enough on the main side for loungers and a table, and narrower on the sides people only walk past. Steps into the pool, the pump-house access and the path from the house are set out first, so that no paver is cut to a sliver at a corner. Swimming pool pavers butt against the back of the coping with a joint between the two. The outer edge gets an edge restraint, so the surround does not creep into the lawn.

Re-Coping a Pool Under Tshwane Water Restrictions

The City of Tshwane's Level 1 list of 2 October 2024 includes "Do not fill or top up swimming pools or water features". The City's notice of 27 August 2026 states that the Level 1 restrictions "were never withdrawn and are therefore still applicable", and lists "Do not fill swimming pools." Coping replacement is therefore planned with the water left in the pool, and any lowering kept to the minimum the job needs. On dolomite land, the national Department of Public Works' dolomite manual (PW344/2017, Annex F, Appendix B, F.B.12) has consultants record a pool's surrounding paving, its splash drainage and a backwash discharge point "not closer than 20m from pool". Ground conditions in the south of the metro are explained under paving in Centurion.

Concrete Coping and Pool Surround Care

Concrete coping and pavers around a pool take sun, chlorinated splash and bare feet. Washing and sealing keep the colour and slow staining, covered under paving cleaning. A loose coping unit is lifted and re-bedded before it lets water behind the pool wall.

What a Pool Paving Quote Needs

Paving Wiz Pretoria: Frequently Asked Questions

What is bullnose pool coping?

Bullnose pool coping has a rounded front edge that overhangs the pool wall. The rounded edge is comfortable to sit on and kind to hands and feet climbing out.

How much coping does my pool need?

The pool's perimeter in metres. An 8 m × 4 m pool needs 24 m of coping: (8 + 4) × 2. Order extra units for corner cuts.

Can I refill my pool after re-coping in Tshwane?

Not under the City's Level 1 water restrictions. The City's notice of 27 August 2026 states the restrictions were never withdrawn and lists "Do not fill swimming pools", so coping work is planned to keep the water in the pool.

Which pavers are best around a pool?

Pavers with a textured surface in a light colour suit pool surrounds, because light surfaces stay cooler under bare feet. The surround falls away from the pool so splash water and rain drain off.

Is concrete coping the same as pool coping tiles?

No. Concrete coping is a solid precast unit that caps the pool wall. Coping tiles are thinner units bedded onto a concrete edge, usually matched to tiles on the surround.

How much does pool paving cost?

R7,000 to R9,800 for a 28 m² surround of concrete blocks at R250 to R350 per m² installed, in a February 2026 Johannesburg and Pretoria paving guide. Coping is quoted per metre on the measured pool.
